#22 The Less Sexy Red Herring | CoS 4, At Flourish and Blotts
Wednesday Jul 06, 2022
Wednesday Jul 06, 2022
Potter Revisited Episode #22 | The Less Sexy Red Herring Aka Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 4 "At Flourish and Blotts"
- We are back from our short break with a long episode - so get a cup of tea and a snack!
- We love how at ease Harry is at The Burrow
- Explosions from the Twins' room are seen as "normal" - were they already starting Weasley's Wizards Wheezes?
- We finally meet Ginny - we discuss Ginny's early crush on Harry and how timid her character seems compared to later in the series
- Gilderoy assigning his own books as textbook seems like a scam. Shay compares it to her Queens University days
- Percy wearing a "knitted tank top" - is it fashion?
- Hermione says she is busy with schoolwork - again we question what kind of work they can be doing outside of school if they can't do magic
- The Twins' note that Percy is acting strange. Shay declares Percy the new Red Herring of this book - but not as "Sexy as Snape" in her view
- Why did they think Harry taking Floo powder by himself on his very first time would be a good idea? Are they not able to send two smaller people together?
- Harry of course almost runs into the Malfoys when lost in Knockturn Alley - we both feel for him and remember what it was like running into peers you would rather not see on Summer holidays
- Apparently Draco has spent the whole summer complaining about Harry, and even Lucius is sick of it
- We meet Lucius Malfoy for the first time, we discuss how he comes across and how it shows how Draco is the way he is
- We see a lot of objects in Borgin and Burkes that play big parts later, particularly in HBP: The Vanishing Cabinet, The Cursed Necklace and The Hand of Glory
- Malfoy is selling dark objects to avoid scandal from Ministry raids - which includes a lot of poisons. What are the Malfoy's doing?
- Harry is rescued by Hagrid, but why was he in Knockturn Alley?
- Shay remembers why she loves Fred so much
- Hermione's parents are introduced, but they do not speak, or do much of anything. Should they have had more of a role in this chapter?
- Would you eat Strawberry and Peanut Butter flavour ice cream? We are not fans
- Ron mentions Percy wants to be Minster of Magic one day - we discuss Percy's ambition and whether it comes down to who he is fundamentally or if it began more out of necessity as he doesn't want to be in the same financial state as his parents
- We agree Lockhart is the OG Influencer
- Ginny speaks up for Harry despite her crush on him usually debilitating her - showing us the beginning of her strength
- Was Lucius slipping Ginny the Diary politically motivated? He is firmly against Arthur's Muggle Protection Act and figured if Ginny got caught it would look bad on him, like Dumbledore reflects at the end of the book
- We wish we could have seem Jason Isaacs and Mark Williams duke it out on screen like Mr Malfoy and Mr Weasley did in the book
- What would Hermione's parents be thinking after all of these? They are described as shaking
- Lucius didn't know the Diary was a Horcurx, but probably knew it would open the Chamber of Secrets - was it supposed to be given to someone who didn't know what it was, or would it have worked out better if someone had it who wanted the Chamber open and knew what it was?
- We know from Dobby that Lucius had been planning the Chamber opening - was he planning Ginny the whole time, or was it a moment of opportunity?

#21 Weasley Grand Theft Auto | CoS 3, The Burrow
Wednesday Jun 08, 2022
Wednesday Jun 08, 2022
Potter Revisited Episode #21 | Weasley Grand Theft Auto Aka Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 3 "The Burrow"
- Tori reminisces about her house being "The Hub" like the Weasley's when growing up
- Did Fred and George come because they were concerned about Harry like Ron, or because they wanted to have an adventure?
- Fred and George are about 14 at the moment - we wonder what the UK driving age is - and how they would even know how to drive a car being Wizards
- How did no Muggles notice a flying car? Does no one get up for water at 2AM?
- Fred and George can pick locks - is this in the realm for the Twins' or too convenient?
- We discuss how the Twins both have creative brains with how they think, especially for Wizards - which definitly helps them with their future endeavors
- Shay brings up how disturbing it feels having the Twins discuss Dobby by who "Owns him" and how it highlights how House Elves are treated in Wizarding society as we view the Weasleys' as "Good" moral characters
- What kind of Magic do House Elves have? Is it similar to Goblins?
- Can we all agree Wizard Society is messed up?
- The Twins and Harry accurately guess Dobby belongs to The Malfoys - is that too convient of a leap?
- Why do Mr Weasley's kids not care about his job? It seems very important. Tori compares it to her Dad working as an accountant
- For someone who writes laws and works for the Government, Mr Weasley takes a lot of risks breaking the laws he writes
- We discuss our first thoughts about The Burrow! Shay loves the cozy vibes it gives, and Tori loves the description of a farm house with wacky extensions added on top
- Tori questions if all Magical residents have names, like The Burrow, and Shay explains it is likely an English tradition
- Does Mrs Weasley constantly comparing the Twins to Percy strain their relationship with him?
- We discuss Fred and George's dynamic within the Weasley Family, and the greater Weasley Family dynamic with each other
- We get our first glimpse of Ginny! We are both looking forward to see her development that was missed in the films
- We also appreciate how different Ginny is compared to Hermione
- Tori's image of The Burrow has changed slightly after learning "Garden" usually means "Backyard" in the UK
- We get our first Mundungus Fletcher name drop from Mr Weasley - doing crime as usual
- Tori compares Ron's love of The Chudley Cannons to Toronto Maple Leaf fans - right comparison or way off?
- Shay relates to Ron's blind faith in a sport team, speaking from experience as a Montreal Canadiens fan
- How did the Weasley's get a Ghoul in the attic? Also good to note Ron claims the Ghoul is useless but it does come in handy during DH
- Ron seems so worried about Harry's opinion of his house since Ron tends to view not being financially well off as a flaw
- One of Shay's favourite part of The Burrow is the family clock. How did the Weasley's get it?
- Tori theorizes it was made during wartime so Mrs Weasley was able to keep an eye on her loved ones when times were uncertain
- Did Fred's hand fall off the clock when he died?
- Both Tori and Shay are still traumatized by Fred's death. Let us know if you are too!

#20 Dobby Will Eat Your Skin Off | CoS 2, Dobby’s Warning
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Potter Revisited Episode #20 | Dobby Will Eat Your Skin Off Aka Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 2 "Dobby's Warning"
- We are finally introduced to House Elves in this chapter - which play a big role in the series, from Dobby, Winky and Kreacher, to Hermione's character development
- Shay finds Dobby's entrance stressful as this is the worst time for Harry to have his magical world invade his life with The Dursley's
- Why does Harry have such good manners?
- Dobby tells Harry that Voldemort has powers that no decent Wizard would have - Shay wonders if Dobby is aware of the Horcurxes or at least the diary being a Horcrux
- Harry is the worst at taking compliments
- What was Dobby's logic in stopping Harry's letters from being received?
- Why was no adult concerned about Harry not responding? #WhyDumbledore
- Shay mentions it is a federal crime to tamper with someone's mail - would Dobby be sent to Azkaban, or is that a Wizard-Only prison?
- Why doesn't Harry just lie to Dobby and say he won't go back to school?
- We learn Pudding in the UK = Dessert
- Harry receives a letter by owl from the Ministry to tell him off for using Magic in front of Muggles - yet this letter comes by magic, in front of said Muggles??
- Is the Ministry not able to detect Magic done by a Wizard vs Magical Creature?
- How did Vernon get someone to put bars on Harry's window? Wouldn't it be a fire safety issue? Wouldn't the neighbors talk?
- Harry is literally being starved and imprisoned but won't use Magic to save his life because he is too scared to be kicked out of school. All the adults failed him
- When all the adults fail him, Ron to the rescue
- Shay says she hates Dobby at the beginning of the book, he causes just too much anxiety
- Why did Dobby come to warn Harry?
- Dobby is one of the most self-aware House Elves we meet in the series
- How do House Elves get tied to a family?
- We touch a little on the slavery comparison of House Elves, and how the series shows us an outside perspective (Hermione) on how wrong it is, and the perspective of those who are just use to it being that way (Ron, ect)
- Right off the bat, Harry asks Dobby how he can free him - does he relate to Dobby having to be in a likely abusive household like himself?
- How does Dobby know about how great Harry and Dumbledore are? The Malfoy's aren't their biggest fans after all...
- Could Dobby have given Harry a bigger hint that this was a Voldemort plot?
- Shay doesn't find Dobby very empathetic to Harry's situation
- Tori shares the context behind the episode title - involving Potter Puppet Pals
- We are looking forward to jumping back into the Magical World next chapter and exploring The Burrow!

#19 Harry’s Birthday Blues | CoS 1, The Worst Birthday
Wednesday May 11, 2022
Wednesday May 11, 2022
Potter Revisited Episode #19 | Harry's Birthday Blues Aka Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 1 "The Worst Birthday"
- We are on the next book of our reread journey, Chamber of Secrets
- This book was first published in 1999!
- Tori discusses how she originally skipped this book at first, but it was the first HP movie she saw in theatres
- Both of us are excited for the mystery aspect of this novel, and learning more about the outside Wizarding World and Hogwarts backstory
- Harry is having the worst time with the Dursley's - no surprise there. But poor Hedwig is locked in her cage - Tori worries about her wellbeing
- Tori questions the fatphobia - specifically around the Dursley's - in the books which seems more jarring reading it now as an adult in 2022 than as a child in the early 2000's
- Shay finds it amusing that the Dursley's are so afraid of Harry, yet he has barely done any spells by this point
- We both talk about the previous book recaps we get, especially in the earlier books and if it is necessary
- Shay wonders if it is a product of the times and discusses her own reading journey
- This turns into a discussion on how reading was taught to us at school
- Why does Hogwarts assign Summer Homework? What does that entail, and is it graded? Wouldn't it be unfair for students with Muggle families?
- Why did they keep Harry in his room when the Mason's were coming over? Why didn't they send him to Ms. Figg's or the park - somewhere away from the house?
- Why is Harry so quick to believe that Ron and Hermione don't care about him or forgot about him?
- Sassy Harry is back with "Well done! You've finally learned the day's of the week!"
- Petunia punishes Harry by making him clean the entire house - Tori wonders if the Dursley's are so focused on appearing upper class if they would have a housekeeper
- Shay believes Petunia needs to have control over her environment so a housekeeper would never work for her
- The neglect Harry is facing from all the Adults in his life is concerning
- Penunia tries to hit him with a frying pan
- No one has heard from Harry all summer but the only ones who seem concerned are Ron and Hermione - who are children
- Once again- WHY DUMBLEDORE???

#17 Literary Whiplash | PS 17, The Man With Two Faces
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Potter Revisited Episode #17 | Literary Whiplash Aka Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 17 "The Man With Two Faces"
- we LOVE the opening line to this chapter!
- Tori feels bad for Hagrid - despite the times we challenge him on not be responsible, his heart is usually in the right place
- Quirrell seems to do wandless magic - is this an oversight?
- Quirrell reveals that Snape and James Potter hated each other at school, which is why Snape hates Harry, which seems to be an unintentional secret as so many know about it
- We discuss what little we know about James Potter as a character and where the truth about him is
- Snape's memories show the worst of James, where Sirius and Remus usually gloss over the bad parts and focus on the good
- Tori loves the marauder's fandom and the ability it gives to create your own version of James Potter
- "There is no 'good' and 'evil', only power and those too weak to seek it." Really shows how Voldemort sees the world
- Harry faces Voldemort for the first time and sees right through him - Dumbledore's man already
- At what point in the novel did Voldemort attach to the back of Quirrell's head?
- The way Voldemort is described is very creepy
- Could Harry being a Horcrux explain how Harry hurt Quirrell, rather the "love" as Dumbledore tells him? Tori discusses her theory
- Dumbledore tells Harry he was doing very well on his own - yet he was in a coma for 3 days? #WhyDumbledore
- Is Dumbledore trying to downplay dying for the Cause since he knows it is likely Harry may have to die?
- Shay wonders how everyone found out what happened between Harry and Quirrell? Did Dumbledore spread it around?
- Shay ponders why Dumbledore tells Harry to say "Voldemort" when his real name is Tom Riddle
- How does Lily's Sacrifice work?
- Would Voldemort have actually spared Lily?
- Could Dumbledore have given Harry an age appropriate answer to why Voldemort tried to kill him? He keeps him in the dark for so long
- Why does Dumbledore gloss over James and Snape's rivrary?
- Ron wonders if Dumbledore meant for Harry to save the stone - and Harry likes the idea. Is this showing Dumbledore manipulating him already?
- Tori loves the photo album Hagrid made for Harry
- Could Harry have contacted all the old school friend Hagrid contacted for the Photos? Shay thinks Dumbledore wouldn't have allowed it due to it interfering with his relationship with Harry and not wanting him to get information outside of him
- We love the final feast, but feel slightly bad that Slytherin lost the house cup because Dumbledore changed the rules at the last minute. This is their Villain Origin Story
- We discuss our overall opinions and thoughts on the first Harry Potter Book!

#16 Tickle The Squid | PS 16, Through The Trapdoor
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
Potter Revisited Episode #16 | Tickle The Squid Aka Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 16 "Through The Trapdoor"
- Harry, Ron and Hermione sit their exams, including making a pineapple tapdance (Charms), turn a mouse into a snuffbox (Transfiguration) and brew a forgetfulness potion (Potions)
- Shay loves the idea of Fred and George tickling the Giant Squid. Tori compares the Squid to Therapy Dogs
- Interesting comparison to Harry writing his History of Magic exam expecting Voldemort to burst in, and writing his History of Magic OWL in book 5, where he has a vision about Voldemort and Sirius
- Hermione studied the 1637 Werewolf Code of Conduct - could this be a hint to her being the first to discover Prof Lupin out in POA?
- We discover Shay is like Hermione - wants to do a post-op on an exam, where Tori is like Ron and just wants to forget about it
- Harry is able to clue things together very quickly despite having the wrong person
- Our first mention of The Hogs Head
- Shay worries about Hargid's drinking - and brings up the serious discussion on Giant anatomy and if Hagrid's liver is ok
- "...Up to something..." Shay reads this in Alan Rickman's voice- don't we all?
- Harry's scar has been hurting more frequently since the Forest - he is able to pick up very quickly that it means something
- Dumbledore leaving for the Ministry seems too convenient - couldn't he see through it? Or did he leave intentionally?
- Harry quickly goes from caring a lot about House Points and how his peers view him, to not caring at all and putting the state of the world on his shoulders - he is 11!
- Ron stating that him AND Hermione will join him comes back around in the later books. This small moment seals all their fates together.
- What lead Neville towards standing up to Harry, Ron and Hermione?
- If they had the time to explain what they were up to, would Neville join them?
- Hermione fully binds Neville - seems a bit extreme
- "There's no wood!" Hermione is not good under pressure
- How would they have dealt with the Troll if Quirrell didn't leave it unconcious?
- Snape picks a logic-based task instead of a magical one - what does that say about his character?
- We love how this chapter leads off and opens in the next!
- Theory: Dumbledore wanted Harry and co to save the stone.
- Shay discusses a fan theory from Super Carlin Brothers where Dumbledore intends for Harry and friends to rescue the stone, and the events in the book that were him manipulating or setting Harry up for this
- Did Dumbledore instruct each professor to make their obstacle a certain way, keeping Harry in mind?
- Was Hagrid revealing how to tame Fluffy a part of Dumbledore's plan?
- Did Dumbledore want Harry to rescue the stone and face Voldemort as a test?

Thursday Mar 17, 2022
Potter Revisited Episode #15 | The Future Looks Bleak, Harry Aka Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 15 "The Forbidden Forest"
- We come up with some excuses Harry and Hermione could have gave for being out at night
- Is this really the most disappointed McGonagall has ever been or is she trying to "scare them straight"
- Harry feels awful for losing Gryffindor so much house points - but he slowly gets used to it as the series goes on
- This is the first time Harry feels isolated in the Wizarding World, but at least he has Ron. Really shows how much Harry values Ron's friendship
- Have the Weasley Twins not lost 150 points or are they good at not getting caught?
- Why is their punishment for breaking the rules/being out of bounds being sent to an out of bounds area? #WhyDumbledore
- Where students punished with corporal punishment during Dumbledore's time as Headmaster?
- Why were Neville and Draco, then Draco and Harry sent off alone in the Forbidden Forest - when they are looking for an unknown and potentially dangerous teacher?
- We meet the Centaurs and get a lot of foreshadowing for the next few chapters and potentially for the rest of the series
- Harry swears to stop "poking around" in this book - which happens a few times throughout the series
- Is Hagrid lax with safety in the forest due to his thoughts on magical creatures, and how he sees dangerous creatures as "misunderstood" and needing a second chance?
- Did Dumbledore want Harry to be caught to send him into the forest, so he would meet Voldemort?
- Does Bane and Ronan's argument with Firenze foreshadowing his exile in OOTP?
- What does it mean to have a "cursed life"?
- Interesting full circle moment that Harry is in the forest in the beginning of the series, and returns at the end to die.
- We discuss the centar's "Mars is bright tonight" observation and how it foreshadows the rest of the series
- What did Firenze see in the stars about Harry?
- What is the lifespan of a centar?
- We do a mini deep dive on Divination in the series
- Are we made to be biased against Divination/Fortune-Telling as Hagrid, Hermione and McGonagall are shown to be skeptical
- Shay loves Divination, specifically dream analysis. According to her if you want to lucid dream, eat a pickle, chocolate icing and cheese before bed.

- Shay ponders what life on the back of Quirrell's head is like - make's Tori think of AVPM
- Ron remembers the exact year Dragon breeding was banned but struggles with History of Magic?
- Shay wonders why Hagrid gives a Dragon brandy? A drunk dragon seems like a bad idea
- Hagrid lets Harry and Co commit serious crimes for him - despite the fact that he is an adult his relationship with the three of them is odd
- Why does Hagrid seem to have such an obsession with dangerous creatures?

Wednesday Feb 16, 2022
Wednesday Feb 16, 2022

- This chapter is a Ron highlight
- Ron's humor is on point - "Really break your leg!"
- Ron encourages Neville - it makes more sense to Tori why he was made a prefect.
- The Ron Vs Malfoy fight - amazing
- Is it weird Hermione is checking out random history books for background reading?
- Harry having nightmares about the mirror and his parents death - is it Harry's own mind, him being a Horcrux, or repressed memories?
- Harry meets Dumbledore face to face for the first time last chapter and does not question him or his intentions
- Ron playing Chess - shows how intelligent Ron is in a different way than Hermione
- We find out who Nicolas Flamel is - we wonder if this was a big shock reading for the first time
- All the Quidditch scenes in this book take place in revolving perspectives unlike the other books
- Snape being Ref - how was this allowed? Can any teacher ref a game?
- Tori and Shay roast Dumbledore as usual
- Hermione and Ron learned the Leg Locker curse just to use on Snape
- Shay loves Bad!Hermione
- Secret Forest Rendezvous
- Shady!Snape strikes again - is this the beginning of Snape being a double agent?
- Did Dumbledore encourage the dislike between Snape and Harry on purpose?
- Dumbledore tells Harry to forget the mirror but reminds him of it after he match, was this intentional? Was Dumbledore preparing Harry?
- Tori is still upset Harry hasn't even seen a photo of his parents
- Shay thinks Hagrid should drop an album - what would it be called?
- Mini deep dive on Neville and how he is such a relatable character
- Malfoy is able to find out insecurities and use them against his enemies, while Neville (and Luna in the future books) seem to do the opposite
- Neville is the one true Gryffindor
- Neville has less support compared to Harry & co (through his family, professors, and sometimes friends) but still always comes through in the end
- Should we do a movie commentary or review? Let us know!
